FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The new Stonewall Library and Archives is set to officially open its doors in Fort Lauderdale today.
Fort Lauderdale officials will cut the ribbon this morning for what is said to be the largest independent library of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender materials in the country.
The circulation will now be located inside the ArtServe building at 1300 E. Sunrise Blvd. The library is open to anyone over 18 years old.
The moving of the Stonewall Library made national headlines during the anti-gay campaign of Fort Lauderdale's former mayor, who opposed a city building providing space to the library. The move required the approval of the city and county commission.
Stonewall is a museum and gallery featuring a collection that is also taken on exhibition tours around the country.
