NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- With the start of hurricane season five weeks away, the residents of a Broward County neighborhood are worried about the strength of their power poles.
Florida Power and Light is preparing for the start of the season. On Thursday morning, crews installed a 70-foot concrete pole outside Westchester Hospital. The new concrete pole was one of 141 that replaced wooden poles near the facility.
The hospital is one of 80 critical infrastructure facilities around Florida whose poles FPL will strengthen this year as part of an eight-year plan to make its entire system storm-ready.
But pardon the people living on Southwest 68th Way in North Lauderdale if they are skeptical. An old utility pole there is being held up, in part, by a rope tied to a pine tree on the opposite side of the road.
Resident Richard McClead said that right after Hurricane Wilma, he watched an out-of-state FPL contractor tie the pole to the tree.
What's more, the tree is not on the public swale. It sits in Judy Scheinver's front yard. She never bothered to call FPL about the precarious pole, but Local 10 did. Within two hours, the power company had someone there to take pictures.
A representative told Local 10 by phone that they are not sure who rigged the old pole but that it should have been removed long ago. FPL also was waiting for the phone and cable companies to move their cables to the new pole and did not realize that already had been done.
Late Thursday afternoon, FPL crews showed up and cut down the rope and the old power pole it was holding up.
A spokesperson said it was just one of 1.1 million poles in its system and that while the power company is in the process of inspecting each one, it appreciates the public notifying them about dangerous situations. She said if one of the neighbors had called to report the rope and pine tree, crews would have been out much sooner to fix the problem.
