HIALEAH, Fla. -- A woman whose car was stolen Wednesday afternoon said a carjacker threw one of her sons out the window before speeding away with her other son in the back seat.
Police said 25-year-old Jorge Barban had been driving a stolen Land Rover when he crashed it into at least three other vehicles near West 16th Avenue and 49th Street on Wednesday afternoon.
That's when police said Barban ran to a nearby Publix grocery store and demanded that Aracelys Romero hand over her Ford Taurus.
Romero's two sons were still in the back seat. She begged for the lives of her children.
"I screamed, 'My kids! My kids!' I was trying to hit him and open the door, but he left," Romero said.
Romero and the children's grandmother escaped the car. Police said that Barban pushed one of the boys out of its window.
"(He) jumped in the car, slapped my mom around, told her to get out of the car before he killed her. My mom got out of the car. She told them, 'Let me grab the kid.' And he just took off in the car, with the kid in the car. Supposedly about 2 miles down the road, from what I hear, he dumped the child out the window in the middle of the street," said Oreste Sosa, the boy's uncle.
Investigators found the stolen car and the 5-year-old boy in the parking lot of the Okeechobee Metrorail station. Police said the boy was not hurt.
"I'm really lucky that my son, nothing happened to him. He could have crashed, and I could have never seen my son again," Romero said.
Police continued to search for the carjacker until Thursday morning, when they identified Barban as a suspect and arrested him. He faces charges of kidnapping, carjacking and child abuse. The judge denied him bond.
Romero is thankful to have her sons back and said she hopes Barban stays locked up for a long time.
"I really think they should never let him out because you don't want those kind of people in the street," Romero said.
