WPLG Editorial: Shorter School Weeks Not Worth The Savings (5/10/09)
POSTED: Thursday, May 7, 2009
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Broward School Board rejected what we think was a bad idea to save money by cutting the school week to just four days. We think the board's decision deserves an A.
The math simply didn't add up. Sure, the school district would have saved nearly $4 million in transportation and operating costs.
But a shorter week would have cut short the learning process for students. And it could have put even more strain on working parents, whose children would have been left unsupervised one day a week.
We should point out, the board left the door open for high schools to decide for themselves whether to shorten the school week.
Local 10 believes shortening the school week is a risk definitely not worth the savings.
That's our take on things. Let us know what you think.
