MIAMI -- Miami narcotics detectives netted about 50 suspects, two AK-47s and other weapons in a sweep that capped a two-month drug operation in Overtown.
"These are serious individuals that have caused havoc and chaos in the neighborhood," said Miami Police Chief John Timoney at a news conference set up on an Overtown street Thursday afternoon.
The youngest arrested is 22 years old; the oldest is 71. Most already have arrest records.
The chief said the weapons haul is significant.
"We have one AK-47 that has been used in shootings around the city and county," he said.
The weapons will be sent to a lab to identify their individual characteristics, then entered into a federal database to see if they can be matched to other crimes.
Police do not yet know if the weapons were used in any of the recent shootings in Liberty City that killed at least two and wounded more than a dozen other young people.
