MIAMI -- Police are searching for four people who were caught on tape stealing cash from a car parked at a gas station last month.
According to Miami-Dade police, Carlos Torres went to the Washington Mutual bank near 26th Street and 120th Avenue in west Miami-Dade County. Torres withdrew $500 in cash, put it inside an envelope in the center console in his car and went across the street to fill up his gas tank.
But what happened next left his wallet empty. When Torres got out of his car and went inside the gas station to pay, a woman followed him and then signaled her accomplice with her right hand to pull their SUV up and block Torres' view, police said.
“I think because they were women, my guard was down. They weren’t your typical criminal-looking people,” Torres said.
While the woman stalled him inside, a second woman went into the passenger-side door of Torres' car, but had no luck. A man then got out of the SUV and made an attempt, but found nothing in Torres' car.
But unfortunately for Torres, the third time was a charm. The man took Torres' cash, got back into the SUV, threw it in reverse and took off.
Torres, a former security guard, was shocked when he realized he had become a victim of a burglar, and even more surprised to find out it was all caught on surveillance tape.
“They were watching me,” Torres said. “Everything I did from the outside, you know.”
Police continue to search for the man and woman who stole the cash, the woman who distracted Torres and a third woman who was with them.
“I think there’s a better way to make money,” Torres told Local 10's Jen Herrera.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
