MIAMI -- The Dalai Lama is stepping up to save Florida International University's religion department from closing.
FIU said the exiled Tibetan leader has pledged $100,000 to keep the department open, which is set to close after budget cuts.
The Dalai Lama was awarded an honorary degree at the university in 1999 and visited the school again five years later.
A professor leading efforts on behalf of the program said he's been told FIU will accept the contribution, but that it alone isn't enough to close a funding gap.
The department is one of three at FIU slated to close to deal with a $27 million cut in state funding. University trustees are scheduled to vote on the full slate of cuts June 12.
