MIAMI -- Miami-Dade police are searching for a teenager who shot a cab driver during a robbery on Wednesday morning.
The shooting happened on U.S. 441/N.W. 7th Avenue at 91st Street. Police said the robbery was so sudden that the driver of the taxi did not have time to pull over before the person who was in the back seat of the cab fired shots at him.
The taxi came to rest atop a curb. The driver was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. His condition has since been upgraded to stable.
Miami-Dade crime scene technicians spent hours meticulously combing the cab for clues.
Police described the gunman, who was last seen fleeing the area on foot, as very young.
"He is between 15 and 16 years old," said Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Rebeca Perez.
Fellow cab drivers gathered at the robbery scene to watch detectives sort through evidence. Many of the drivers said the area is problematic.
"It happened yesterday, they robbed three guys on the same day, same area," said taxi driver Frankie Lopez.
One of the robbery victims also showed up to the scene.
"He pulled a gun," said Maurice Lopez, as he described the gunman throwing his cell phone and demanding his wallet and cash.
For some cab drivers, the danger is as real as their need to feed their families. Some drivers said they have few options to support their children.
The robber in Wednesday morning's shooting is still on the run. Police are searing for a teen who is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 120 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jean shorts.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
