BROADVIEW PARK, Fla. -- Police are asking residents of a Broward County neighborhood to be on the lookout for burglars after a string of crimes this summer.
As soon as school lets out for the summer every year, Detective Dan Mellies of the Broward Sheriff's Office prepares for more break-ins. However, he never anticipated anything like the recent crime streak.
"They're picking out their houses very carefully. They kind of know when people come and go," he said.
In the span of less than two months, Mellies said criminals burglarized 15 homes and 15 vehicles in the Broadview Park area.
One longtime resident who spoke with Local 10's Sasha Andrade is especially concerned. He said that the criminals got away with one of his pistols. He said they snatched it right out of his motor home.
"They had to climb up the bath boat, cross through the window -- that's the only way it could've gone," the resident said.
In response, deputies are hitting the streets with extra force. They are relying heavily on the neighborhood for help. Detectives need people to watch out for suspicious activity.
"A lot of times what they'll do is knock on the front door, stay out there for several minutes. If no one answers, they're fairly confident no one is home," Mellies said.
BSO is urging the community to join together to be part of the solution.
