WPLG Editorial: Stallworth Deal Puts Price On Justice (6/27/09)
POSTED: Thursday, June 25, 2009
MIAMI -- How much does justice cost? In the case of football player Donte Stallworth, it's several million dollars.
That's what Stallworth paid the family of the man he killed while he was driving drunk. And they agreed to let him off with only 30 days in jail.
Stallworth is no different from any other drunk driver whose bad judgment tragically ends a life, except most don't offer the victims' families money. In fact, many families show up to court demanding punishment.
In the past, we've seen Hollywood celebs serve more jail time in DUI cases where no one was hurt. Recently, a lobster poacher in the Keys got three times more jail time.
Stallworth's deal puts a price tag on justice -- the question is, at what price does that message send?
That's our take on things. Let us know what you think.
