File On Officer In Shootings Released

Evaluation: Officer Performs Satisfactorily

More details about a Miami Beach police officer involved in two fatal shootings are coming to light after the police department released his personnel record.

The most recent evaluation available for Miami Beach Officer Adam Tavss described a rookie officer learning and doing his job on the patrol beat, and it was satisfactory but not stellar, Local 10's Glenna Milberg reported.

Tavss is the officer at the center of accusations about the death of Husien Shehada, a Virginia man whom Tavss shot and killed during a call earlier this month.

Shehada and his brother were the subjects of 911 calls reporting that they were armed and dangerous.

"From multiple callers that these two gentlemen were involved in an altercation. They armed themselves with what appeared to be a rifle and a handgun, and our officers acted on that information," said Alex Bello of the Miami Beach Fraternal Order of Police.

The fact that Tavss was involved in a second fatal shooting during the same week is highly unusual, though not unprecedented. In that case, officers shot and killed an armed carjacking suspect on the MacArthur Causeway.

Tavss, a former teacher, wants to be a police trainer and volunteers with a kindergarten program.

The officer's personnel file is the first record to be released because the Miami Beach Police Department and the state attorney's office do not talk about open investigations.

Shehada's family has filled the void with a Facebook group and Web sites calling for justice. The police department said that is what it's trying to get to.

Among the evidence are 911 calls and witness statements that might be the key to determining whether Tavss' actions were appropriate and justified.
