FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Former World Series hero Jim Leyritz has been arrested again and will spend the holiday weekend in jail after a judge revoked his bond on a previous DUI manslaughter charge.
Leyritz is being held at the Broward County Jail on a charge of domestic battery. The former New York Yankee was arrested at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
According to a police report, Leyritz's ex-wife said he hit her after he found out she wrote a check on his bank account without his permission. Karrie Leyritz said he hit her twice in the face and pushed her to the ground, the report said.
The incident was reported to have happened at the home the two of them still share in Davie. Karrie Leyritz did have a black eye on Thursday morning, and according to the police report, there was blood on a bedroom wall.
Police said they were skeptical of the allegations, in part because Karrie Leyritz has allegedly hit herself in the past and claimed that Jim Leyritz beat her.
Officers said Karrie Leyritz was intoxicated, that she gave two different accounts of what happened, and that the three children at home at the time did not hear an argument, Local 10's Roger Lohse reported.
"Karrie, did you hit yourself?" Lohse asked.
"No," Karrie Leyritz said.
"We read the report and there are some inconsistencies. You told a couple of different stories," Lohse said.
"No, absolutely not. I'll talk to you guys after court," Karrie Leyritz said.
According to the police report, Jim Leyritz claimed his ex-wife was upset because he is getting ready to evict her, and he accused her of injuring herself to get revenge.
According to Jim Leyritz’s attorney, David Bogenschutz, Davie police had to arrest the former Major League Baseball player because of the nature of the charges.
"There’s a least an unwritten rule, post-O.J. (Simpson), that when you get called on domestic violence, somebody’s going, and in this case, since she was making the allegation, it was Jim," Bogenschutz said.
Jim Leyritz was out on bond awaiting his DUI manslaughter trial, which is set to begin in September. He is accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a Broward mother in Fort Lauderdale in December 2007.
The blood tests showed that the victim in that case was actually more intoxicated than Leyritz was, Lohse reported.
Thursday was the second time Jim Leyritz has been arrested since he was freed on bond on the DUI manslaughter charges. He was arrested once on suspicion of violating his parole. A judge agreed to free him on bond again, however.
Jim Leyritz's bond on the new charge is only $1,000, but he will remain in jail for the long holiday weekend. The judge revoked his bond in the DUI manslaughter case until he can hear more about the new allegations. A hearing will be held next week.
