Roof Collapses During Storm

Street Flooding Swamps Cars

Heavy downpours and winds knocked a hole in the roof of a South Florida business Thursday afternoon as streets flooded in several areas.

As the rain poured down on Hallandale Beach, the roof at Tui Lifestyle, an interior design company, became overwhelmed with water and a large hole opened, allowing water to gush into the warehouse below.

"We just heard and loud noise and the water came rushing in," Dan Teeters told local 10's Neki Mohan.

The power was shut off at the building and employees were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Employees said the hole in the ceiling opened above a storage area, and they believe the furniture kept there should be OK. The business has closed for the weekend.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for northeastern Miami-Dade County and southeastern Broward County, where Tui Lifestyle is located, on Thursday afternoon. But there was no confirmed report of a tornado touching down.

In Aventura, some drivers decided to try to drive through standing water near U.S. 1 and Northeast 191st Street. A tow truck could be seen towing one car away through the water, which was several inches deep.

In the middle of an Aventura parking lot, Steven Briar's car sat waterlogged as he waited for help to come.

"I suffer in silence," Briar said.

The fast-moving rain storm that dumped several inches of rain in a matter of minutes wreaked havoc for many South Floridians.

Some traffic lights went out across South Florida, making the evening commute worse for drivers, as well.

The afternoon commute was a washout, and rush hour commuters on Hallandale Beach Boulevard had some interesting companions as fish swam in the water alongside them.

Adam Mark runs a liquidation business but on Thursday, he focused keeping the water out of his office.

"When the sun comes out, I will be very happy," Mark said.
