HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a boat that struck two divers off the coast of Hollywood Beach Sunday and took off.
It happened at around 11:50 a.m. at the beach near Johnson Street. Witnesses said the driver of the boat hit the divers, slowed down and then took off back out to sea.
Rudy Perez and his 15-year-old son, Christian, said they were diving 150 yards off the coast of Hollywood Beach when they heard an engine.
"We were all down in the water, and we started hearing this loud noise," Christian Perez said.
"This noise was getting louder and louder. When I started to come up and see what it was, it was already too late. My head hit the bottom of the boat," Rudy Perez said.
"I was coming up to get air and out of nowhere, the boat just comes right over me," Christian Perez said.
"I said, 'What's going on?' and he just turned around and (said), 'Sorry,' and took off," Rudy Perez said.
The father and son said they did have a dive flag up.
"I believe from what witnesses told us that the person knew he hit something. Whether he thought it was a person or not, I don't know," Hollywood Fire Rescue Capt. Pat Hendrick told Local 10's Rob Schmitt.
The victims were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They were resting at home Monday after being released from the hospital. Christian Perez told Local 10's Jeff Weinsier that the boat hit his back and legs and that he has severe pain when he walks.
The Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating. Officials are searching for a 25-foot white boat named "Karma."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Coast Guard or Hollywood police.
