HIALEAH, Fla. -- A Hialeah police officer's unmarked car and the gun he had in his trunk were stolen early Friday morning from the parking lot of a bar.
According to Hialeah police, the officer was working an off-duty detail at the Flanigan's Seafood Bar and Grill at 1550 West 84th St.
Around 4 a.m., the officer found glass at the spot where his 2000 gold Ford Taurus had been parked, leading police to believe the thief smashed a window to get inside.
In the car's trunk was the officer's uniform, gun and ammunition.
"He had at least one firearm -- his pistol, a Glock pistol -- and perhaps an assault rifle in the vehicle," said Detective Carl Zogby of the Hialeah Police Department.
Police think the person who stole the car knew it belonged to a police officer.
The car does have a tracking device, and police are working to trace it.
The Flanigan's restaurant has surveillance cameras, as do several businesses at a nearby shopping center. Hialeah police are looking into whether any of the cameras might have captured the crime.
