MIAMI -- A teacher of children with special needs has been convicted of child abuse after her students drank a soda laced with hot sauce.
Jurors found Sylvia Tagle guilty on one count of abuse after intentionally letting children at Bob Graham Educational Center drink the spicy soda in order to teach them a lesson about not taking her drink.
"Did you put hot sauce in their drink to modify their behavior?" an attorney asked Tagle on the stand.
"No. The hot sauce was not for them," Tagle said.
Tagle said she liked to drink soda with hot sauce and the students took it without realizing.
According to the arrest report, a teacher's aide alleged that Tagle did not allow diaper changes, either, and that she pulled students by the hair.
"Did you hear the allegation that somebody says you pulled hair? Did that happen?" an attorney asked Tagle.
"No, it never happened. No, I do not know what she's talking about," Tagle said.
Tagle resigned from her job with the school district in May.
