MIAMI -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted 50 pounds of counterfeit Viagra pills at Miami International Airport, officials said Friday.
According to CBP officials, the officers were inspecting a shipment from India that was traveling through the U.S. when they discovered several boxes containing pills.
Samples of the pills were sent to an import specialist group for analysis, and officials realized they were not real Viagra pills.
"The people who traffic in this type of crime not only steal from legitimate companies, but they also dupe the unknowing consumer into buying items that are of unknown origin and manufacture. In some cases, a counterfeit item that does not meet the manufacturer’s specifications can threaten the health or safety of a consumer,” CBP Director of Field Operations Harold Woodward said in a news release.
Officials said they found 21,600 of the fake Viagra pills in the shipment.
