MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Police are investigating a robbery and shooting outside the Carolmart flea market in Miami Gardens that left one man with a bullet wound to the back. That bullet was inches from striking the victim's toddler.
The victim, who family members identified only as "J.R.," was leaving the flea market Saturday afternoon with his son, wife, and several other family members.
"Three guys approached him to take his chain," Cathy Garcia, the victim's mother-in-law, told Local 10's Janine Stanwood.
Danny Menendez, his brother-in-law who was also walking with the family, said he saw the suspects.
"They took his chain. After they took his chain, he was walking away and they still shot him in the back," Menendez said.
"They were just chasing him and they shot him in the back," Garcia added.
With his child still in his arms, the victim collapsed in the parking lot where blood stains were still visible hours after the incident.
He was transported to an area hospital and his wife, who was visibly shaken, was treated on scene by paramedics. The little boy could be heard crying.
Miami Gardens police, who arrived on scene, found no suspects.
"I mean, if you already have the chain, why do you have to shoot someone who has a baby in their hand? It makes me feel like I don't want to live here in Miami, that's how it makes me feel. Like I want to take my family and get out of here," Garcia said.
The victim is expected to survive.
Police said there may have been two or more suspects, possibly driving a gray Ford Taurus. They are asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
