MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The interim President of Florida Memorial University responded to the anger and accusations leveled at the school since video of a scuffle on campus last week was posted on a popular Internet site.
“That was just a very unfortunate incident. I don’t have all the details yet because there is an ongoing investigation," Dr. Sandra Taylor Thompson told Local 10's Julie Summers.
Although the incident is still being investigated by both Miami Gardens police and the university, the video shot by a student clearly shows a campus guard waving his loaded weapon.
“It is a concern and we are looking at it – trying to find out exactly what the situation is," Thompson said. "This is a security firm we’ve only had since November 2008."
According to Thompson, the guard shown on the video is no longer allowed on campus, and neither is the student who sparked the incident, 19-year-old Emory Mitchell.
“Because the student was arrested, he has been suspended from the institution. That’s in our handbook. That’s our policy,” Thompson said.
She said that even if Mitchell is eventually found innocent of the charges, he hit a security guard that night and the suspension could still stand.
In addition, she said, Mitchell failed to show his school ID to the guard who suspected him of drug possession. That too violates school policy.
“If a security guard or faculty asks to see your ID, you’re supposed to present that. That’s clear school policy,” she said.
Mitchell allegedly told the guard he had lost his identification card.
"When a student loses an ID, he can go to the business office and pay $25 and get a replacement,” Thompson said.
“I feel like it’s outrageous and I feel like Florida Memorial University has failed me,” Mitchell told Local 10 last Sunday.
“My concern is always for the safety of all our students," Thompson said. "There are often individuals who are not really here for the right reasons. And when that element appears – we do our best to weed them out.”
