WESTON, Fla. -- A Miami-based agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration was one of three who died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Monday.
Special Agent Chad Michael was 30 years old. Before he was deployed overseas, Michael worked in South Florida for six years.
The local DEA agency described Michael as an outstanding agent and an overall great guy. He volunteered to go to Afghanistan to help combat a well organized opium industry.
Michael died on his way back from a mission. The DEA would not say whether the crash was accidental.
"I can tell you that when we broke the news to the division Monday, there was not a dry eye in the house -- a very popular young man as well as an outstanding agent," said DEA Special Agent Mark Trouville.
Michael was not married and had no children. He leaves behind a mother and a brother.
