MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Prosecutors announced Tuesday that a teen accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend and their unborn child will be tried as an adult, and he plans to fight the charges against him.
On Monday, Edward Jermaine Babbs, 17, was transferred out of the juvenile detention facility and booked into the Broward County Main Jail.
Babbs is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
In early October, the body of Stephanie Rabsatt, 17, was found inside a parked car at a Miramar Winn-Dixie. Rabsatt was 8 months pregnant. Police said Babbs was the father of Rabsatt's unborn baby, who would have been born this month.
Police have said that they linked a gun to Babbs, and they are calling the killing the result of a domestic dispute.
Babbs' lawyer, Jerome Stone, said Tuesday that this is all a mistake and that he and his client are not giving up.
Babbs appeared before a Broward County judge Tuesday morning. His lawyer said he is innocent.
"My client has from the very beginning denied that he had any reason to kill the mother of his child. He did not do it. It's a sad day for both families. It's a sad case for both families," Stone said.
Rabsatt's family was not in court for Babbs' appearance. Her cousin was due to deliver a baby around the same time.
Babbs is expected to plead not guilty at an arraignment later this month. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
