MIAMI -- A giraffe was born Tuesday morning at Miami Metrozoo.
According to Metrozoo spokesman Ron Magill, the reticulated giraffe was born at 9:34 a.m. to 25-year-old Kita.
Tuesday was the 12th time Kita has given birth at Metrozoo, and the baby is the 42nd giraffe to be born there, Magill said.
A neonatal exam is tentatively scheduled for the baby for Friday. Veterinarians will determine the baby's gender and size and decide when the baby can go into the exhibit.
Magill said the giraffe's gestation period is 15 months, and newborns often are more than 150 pounds and 6 feet tall.
Kita's new baby has not yet been named.
