FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Police said a 12-year veteran of the Fort Lauderdale police was forced to open fire on a man near a bus station Wednesday afternoon.
Fort Lauderdale police said Sgt. Dean Schoen was working an off-duty detail at the bus terminal at Broward Boulevard and Northwest First Avenue at about 1 p.m. when someone alerted him to a confrontation and told him that a man was armed.
After calling for backup, the officer investigated. Fort Lauderdale police said Schoen found 20-year-old Jonas Joseph armed with a knife.
"I heard the yelling," said a witness named Michael. "(They said), 'Drop the knife.'"
Several witnesses told police that Schoen told Joseph to drop the knife, but Joseph refused and instead went toward the officer.
Police said the sergeant opened fire, wounding Joseph, who then ran toward the bus terminal, where he collapsed. Joseph was taken to Broward General Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, according to police. Authorities said Joseph's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Fort Lauderdale police said Joseph will face charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer.
A weapon was found at the scene, according to police, but officials did not say what kind.
Fort Lauderdale police said a bystander, 53-year-old Luis Redina, was inadvertently wounded during the incident. He was treated and released.
The sergeant has been put on administrative leave, per standard procedure.
