FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A day after returning to South Florida, where he is accused of running a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme, high-profile lawyer Scott Rothstein was cooperating with authorities.
Late into Wednesday night, federal agents were still searching the law firm of Rothstein, Rosenfeldt and Adler.
"We want them to search and look for eveything they need to find evidence of any crimes that may have occured," said Stuart Rosenfeldt, who now has control of the firm.
Rosenfeldt said the FBI and IRS are working and the firm is cooperating.
"We made available our I.T. staff through the night, at our expense," he said.
Souces in the building told Local 10 about forty federal agents were digging through the office that Rosenfeldt, up until Tuesday, ran with partner Scott Rothstein.
A line of government-issued cars were poised in the parking garage. Agents were seen walking in and out.
At the Hyatt hotel on the 17th St. Causeway, a cocktail kickoff was held for the Jeb Bush Florida Classic. It is a mega-event that Rothstein, Rosenfeldt and Adler was supposed to sponsor.
"They're no longer involved. They pulled out after this happened this week," said Christina Landshute, the event's organizer.
Before returning to South Florida, Rothstein reportedly sent this text message to members of his firm:
"Sorry for letting you all down," he wrote. "I am a fool. I thought I could fix it but got trapped by my ego and refusal to fail and now all I have accomplished is hurting the people I love. Please take care of yourselves and please protect Kimmie (Rothstein's wife). She knew nothing. Neither did she nor any of you deserve what I did. I hope God allows me to see you on the other side. Love, Scott."
Although Rothstein is believed to be in South Florida, as of late Wednesday, he had not been seen publicly.
"Have you spoken your partner at all?" Local 10's Janine Stanwood asked Rosenfeldt.
"I don't want to speak with my partner. Thank you," he answered.
