PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- The Charlotte County sheriff announced Thursday that the search of a Punta Gorda property in the case of a girl reported missing in 1999 has been suspended after no remains were found.
Investigators with the FBI and Charlotte County spent Tuesday, Wednesday and part of Thursday searching the yard of a home near Punta Gorda for the remains of 4-year-old Pilar Rodriguez.
Pilar, who lived in Hollywood with her father, was reported missing in 1999. Police said a baby-sitter,
Melissa Cooper, and Pilar each lived in Hollywood when Pilar's father agreed to let Cooper take Pilar to the west coast of Florida to visit her boyfriend,
Keith Wilson, in February 1999.
Pilar has not been seen since, and no one has been charged in connection with her disappearance.
Authorities began searching the yard of Wilson's grandmother this week after receiving an anonymous tip in the case.
Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Cameron said Thursday afternoon that officials are suspending the search of the yard. He said investigators found no human remains but did find some evidence on the property. Police did not say specifically what they found.
Sheriff's office representatives said the case remains open.
"We are not disappointed that we did not find Pilar, and time is on our side in eventually solving this case," said Retired Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Maj. Mike Gandy, who coordinated the search. "This case is hot."
