The Wings Over Homestead air show is open and flying high.

Wings Over Homestead will be the first air show held at Homestead Air Reserve Base since 1992, when Hurricane Andrew damaged the facility, according to representatives of the base. The show will feature several acts, including the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds' speed might make them hard to see sometimes, but they are definitely not hard to hear. The planes streaked across a stormy South Florida sky Thursday as they arrived for air show preparations.

Maj. Sean Gustafson, a Palmetto Bay resident, and eight other pilots make up the Thunderbirds, a team that performs daring maneuvers across the country.

"A lot of training -- we fly the maneuvers, we do from March to November. We practice very often, so we do that about twice a day every day for four months, so we get very skilled at it, very good and very safe," Gustafson said.

The free event is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Homestead Air Reserve Base. Visitors can watch the flying demonstrations and tour some planes.
