MIAMI -- A baby giraffe born at Miami Metrozoo had her first doctor's visit Friday, but she does not have a name yet.
The female giraffe was born Tuesday morning to Kita, a 25-year-old giraffe, after a 15-month gestation period. The newborn is the 42nd giraffe born at Metrozoo.
Kita already has given birth to 11 babies at Metrozoo.
Veterinarians performing the baby's neonatal exam Friday determined it is a female that weighs 135 pounds.
The baby will be on display this weekend at Miami Metrozoo.
Miami Metrozoo is holding a contest to name the baby giraffe. People can submit their ideas for the baby's name to the Metrozoo by e-mailing
info@zsf.org by Nov. 20.
The giraffe keeper staff will choose the winning name, which will be announced on Nov. 30.
