FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A Fort Lauderdale couple has been given a deadline to clean up the clutter in their yard, and Local 10's Care Force stepped in Friday to help.
Bill and Helen Dunsford have accumulated mounds of debris in the yard of their home of 42 years. The couple has been fined $200 per day since mid-August for the conditions outside their home.
At a meeting last week with the Broward County Health and Sanitary Control Board, the couple produced receipts proving they had removed one ton of debris from their yard, but it was not enough.
The county has given 74-year-old Bill and 65-year-old Helen Dunsford a deadline to clean up the clutter.
Local 10's Care Force called 1-800-Got-Junk for reinforcement. The Dunsfords marked all the items they wanted removed using blue painter's tape.
Five men in five trucks showed up Friday morning, ready to dig through the piles of debris.
Soiled mattresses, rotted plywood and plastic containers were just some of the items they whisked away.
A few hours into the cleanup, the Dunsfords said they felt some progress was being made.
"We could never have done this by ourselves. As we get into it, I see the scope of the problems, and they're enormous," Helen Dunsford said.
