MIAMI -- Former NFL star and "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Lawrence Taylor was arrested Sunday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP said Hialeah police responded to a report of a crash on the Palmetto Expressway at 103rd Street. One vehicle was damaged, and police said a second vehicle had fled the scene. No injuries were reported.
According to FHP, the vehicle that fled was missing a tire and had scratched the ground.
Hialeah police found a vehicle matching the description of the car involved in the crash on 122nd Street off the Palmetto Expressway, and Taylor was outside the car, talking on his cell phone. Police said Taylor had driven 2 miles on an axle, without a tire or even a rim.
According to police, Taylor told officers he thought he had hit a guardrail, not a car, and he was trying to get off the highway.
Taylor, a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, has had a long history of substance abuse but was not given a roadside sobriety test because FHP troopers said he did not show any signs of impairment.
Taylor was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, a second-degree misdemeanor.
Taylor was released on $500 bond Sunday night.
At his Pembroke Pines home Monday, delivery packages were stacked up outside the front door and two cars sat in the driveway, but no one answered the door.
