MIAMI -- Maj. Miguel Exposito was named as the new police chief for the city of Miami Thursday morning.
“I’ve had the opportunity to meet with Exposito and I’ve had the opportunity to look at his resume. He’s a very impressive man," Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff told Local 10’s Julie Summers Wednesday night.
Sarnoff said what he likes most is what Exposito promised him he would accomplish.
“He believes he can get 26 more police officers on the street than exist now from the administrative jobs," Sarnoff said.
Praise for Exposito comes from within the rank and file as well – which is important because low morale under former Chief John Timoney was one of the main reasons new Mayor Regalado said he wanted a change.
“If he makes those changes, I’m very comfortable. I’m very happy. I like John. I have to be straight up and honest with you,” Sarnoff said.
Sarnoff also said he believes Timoney might stay in South Florida.
“I think he’s going to continue to make an impact here -- wherever he goes and whatever he does -- and I think he’s going to be an outstanding member of our community,” Sarnoff said.
Exposito has the support of the union, which Timoney did not. The union supports Regalado, as well, and its president met with the mayor on the eve of his appointment.
"I think he's a great guy. He's got a world of experience. I think he'll make a great chief," said Armando Aguilar, President of the Fraternal Order of Police.
