Could Your Car Make You Sick?

Remember To Disinfect The Inside Of Your Car

As we head into what may be the height of the flu season, people are doing everything they can to avoid getting sick.

They wipe down workplaces, kitchen counters and grocery carts. But they could be overlooking a prime place for bacteria to grow -- the inside of cars.

"I never thought about it," said motorist Priscilla Feldman.

Christine Manguno, a researcher at Nova Southeastern University, tested Feldman's car to see what kinds of bacteria might be lurking on four key surfaces.

"We did the turn signal handle, we did the steering wheel, we did the gear shifter and we did the cup holder," said Manguno.

Researchers found traces of staphylococuss, which can cause everything from minor skin infections to major respiratory illnesses.

"We also found enterococcus, which can come from fecal matter," Manguno said.

The tests also revealed the presence of candida albicans, which Manguno said can cause diaper rash and yeast infections.

Disgusted by the data, Feldman decided to try out a new car cleaning method from a company called BioGuard.

"We started by deep cleaning the interior of the car, then sprayed the entire interior with a hospital grade disinfectant that's registered with the EPA," said Rafael Esquivel, owner of the South Florida BioGuard franchise.

Researchers re-tested the cleaned areas and found a significant improvement in the level of germs and bacteria.

"We saw a difference as high as 96 percent in how much it disinfected certain areas," said Manguno.

Feldman's car was also treated with an antimicrobial surface protectant that can provide a barrier against germs and bacteria for several weeks.

"At least I know while I'm driving, it's one less issue I'm stuck with," she said.

The BioGuard process costs $85, which includes an exterior cleaning of the vehicle, regardless of the size.
