PARKLAND, Fla. -- Police are searching for a man who pushed down an 82-year-old store greeter who tried to stop him from stealing computers from a wholesale store.
The incident happened at BJ's Wholesale in the 5900 block of West Hillsboro Boulevard just before 5:15 p.m. on Oct. 30.
According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, a man walked into the store and headed straight for the computer area. Then, he returned to the front to ask 82-year-old greeter Bernard Sobol to leave his post, where he checks customers' receipts as they leave the store, and help him with the computers. Sobol would not leave his work area.
Police said the man went back to the computer section, grabbed two computer boxes and tried to leave the store.
Sobol spotted the man trying to make off with the computers and began to run after him, but the man pushed him to the ground and kept on running, according to BSO. A witness gave chase, and the man dropped the computers outside the store and ran away, police said.
According to BSO, the witness kept chasing the man until he lifted his shirt, revealing something silver. It is uncertain what the silver object was.
BSO set up a perimeter, but they did not find the man who tried to steal the computers.
Sobol was taken to Northwest Medical Center for treatment of a broken rib and some minor scratches.
The man who pushed Sobol was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 160 pounds. Police said he was in his 20s.
A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
