CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- More than 100 mourners packed a Coral Springs church Friday to remember one of three teenage boys killed when a car flipped into a canal last weekend.
Classmates, teachers and family members of 16-year-old Sean Maxey filled the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church for the funeral.
Maxey was one of three teenagers killed when their car crashed into a Coral Springs canal early Sunday morning. Investigators said the car Maxey was driving, a red Volkswagen, collided with another vehicle at the corner of University and Brokenwoods drives. Maxey threw the car in reverse, police said, backing over a speed limit sign, hitting a guard rail and plunging into a canal, where it landed upside-down.
Two passengers in Maxey's car, Robert Nugent and Anthony Almonte, both 16, died. A fourth passenger, 15-year-old Evan Sinsigalli, managed to escape, swimming to safety.
The deaths have rocked the entire student body at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School, which the victims attended.
"I still can't believe it to this day, but I just think about him every day," said 16-year-old Marcus Matthew, a close friend of Maxey. "I don't like to think about it. I cry all the time."
Some students made and sold T-shirts with all of the victims' pictures. Several students wore those shirts to the funeral.
"We're trying to help out and pay for the funeral expenses," said 18-year-old Adrianna Quintero.
Maxey's funeral was the first of three final goodbyes for teachers, family members, friends and classmates.
Many students said they plan to pay their respects at all three funerals.
"It's really hard for all of us, but we're staying strong -- just holding in there for the family," said 15-year-old Mika Moreno.
