MIAMI -- University of Miami police said they have taken suspects into custody after four people in a car drove around campus Friday, firing a BB gun from a window.
According to police, the BB gunshots came from a silver Volvo with two men and two women inside.
Police said the group drove through the area of the Hecht-Stanford Dining Hall and the Wellness Center at about 2:30 p.m., firing BB pellets from a rolled-down window. One girl was hit with a BB in the arm but only had a minor bruise, Local 10's Glenna Milberg reported.
"Some guy just came screaming, 'There's been a shooting on campus,'" said one student.
"There was a lot of commotion. It was quite hectic. Everyone was really checking their phones," said student Steve Adams.
UM activated its Emergency Notification Network at 2:42 p.m., locking down the campus. The university sent a message to students, telling them the campus was closed and cautioning them to go inside, lock their doors and windows and not let anyone in.
A little less than an hour later, the university sent another e-mail to students, giving the all-clear and reopening the campus.
The university sent out the alerts, apparently opting to be safe rather than sorry, unlike last week, when two students were robbed at gunpoint just off campus at a Metrorail station. No campus alerts went out in connection with that crime.
Police said the suspects were taken into custody.
Anyone with information is asked to call UM police at 305-284-6666.
