POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- Saturday afternoon in Pompano Beach there was a major show of support for Michael Brewer, the 15-year-old boy who was set on fire last month.
Hundreds gathered at Galuppi's restaurant for the latest of several fundraisers.
Alliance Care donated home health care services for Brewer after he gets out of the hospital.
Everglades College donated a four year scholarship.
"It's incredible. The outpouring of love from everybody from the community. I just want to thank everybody for everything," said Valerie Brewer, Michael's mother.
It was the biggest fundraiser yet.
Miami Dolphins cheerleaders and football players signed autogtaphs.
"We wanted to come out and lend our support and let Michael know we're thinking of him," said injured quarterback Chad Pennington.
An Elvis impersonator even performed.
But the smiles and fun have not been easy to come by. Little victories, though, make them possible.
"The breathing tube has been taken out. Mikey's been eating some real food," said Robert Moberg, an uncle.
On Friday, Local 10 learned Brewer had walked for the first time.
"And he's getting better every day, and he still has a long way to go," said his mother.
"This was a horrendus crime, and it obviously generated a lot of community support and it's great to see the community come out to support a crime victim," said Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti, who was also at the fundraiser.
It was a day in October the community will never forget. Police said five teens doused Brewer with rubbing alcohol and lit him on fire. More than two-thirds of his body was burned.
"But he is making progress. And I just want to thank everybody. Thank you so very much for everything. Thank you," Brewer's mother said.
