Burned Teen Continues To Heal

Michael Brewer's Mother Tries To Focus On Son

The mother of Michael Brewer, a teenager who was set on fire allegedly at the hands of a group of other teens, gave reporters an update Wednesday on the progress of his recovery.

Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn unit said Michael Brewer's recovery is going extremely well, even better than expected. The 15-year-old boy is alert and mobile and takes physical therapy for three hours a day. The doctors said he also eats three meals a day.

“I am amazed at how he is handling himself and healing," said the teen's father, Michael Brewer Sr.

“I am so proud of him It is incredible. I know I couldn’t do what he is doing," said Valerie Brewer, the teen's mother.

Michael Brewer's doctor, Dr. Carl Schulman, said the healing process is extremely painful.

“He goes through an extensive and grueling period of several hours of physical therapy every day," Schulman said.

Valerie Brewer said her son's recovery has been excruciatingly painful but that he has been very brave. She said his mobility is increasing and that she woke Tuesday night to her son asking her to help him get back to bed after he'd gone to the bathroom.

"He managed to get out of bed on his own and make it into the bathroom, which just floors me with all the burns that he has and the pain that he has to tolerate on a daily basis. It just amazes me that he can do this by himself," Valerie Brewer said.

The teen was burned over 65 percent of his body in the October attack and has undergone several operations since.

Three teenagers -- 15-year-old Denver Jarvis, 15-year-old Matthew Bent and 16-year-old Jesus Mendez -- have been arrested and charged as adults with attempted second-degree murder. Two other teenagers who witnessed with the attack were initially arrested, but they have since been released and might not face charges.

Investigators said they believe the teens doused Michael Brewer with rubbing alcohol and lit him on fire, allegedly in retaliation because Brewer had told police that one of them had tried to steal his father's bicycle.

Valerie Brewer said Michael remembers the attack but does not want to talk about it and that he is focused on his recovery. The mother said that immediately after the attack, she was angry at the boys but quickly found a way to deal with her feelings.

"The second day that we were here, I got down on my hands and knees and I prayed to God to take my anger and my hatred because I knew if I kept it inside of me I wouldn't be able to focus on my son, and He did that. My husband and I pray on a daily basis to keep us strong and to keep us focused on Michael," Valerie Brewer said.

Michael Brewer still has a long road to recovery. He has another skin graft operation already scheduled, and doctors said he could need one or two more after that. The teen could have to spend another month or month and a half at Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn unit.

The injured teen is allowed visitors, and recently, Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning and his wife stopped by.

Valerie and Michael Brewer Sr. said they would like to thank well-wishers for all of the cards, gift baskets and donations they have received. Michael also is aware of all the fundraisers and support he has received locally and worldwide.

"Larry King sent him a basket of cookies, which he has devoured," Valerie Brewer said. "Ozzy Osbourne sent him a care package with a CD in it, and he jams out to Ozzy and he focuses on the music."

The Brewers said they would spend the Thanksgiving holiday at Michael's bedside and give thanks for his recovery.

"We hope that everyone reaches deep down in their heart and finds what they are truly thankful for," Valerie Brewer said.
