DAVIE, Fla. -- Davie has always been known as the small town sandwiched between two major cities.
The city fights to stay quaint. So, imagine how well a Wal-Mart super store fits in.
“Did you see the dirt and the filth that the trucks bring in?” shouted one resident during a heated exchange with another resident.
Wal-Mart purchased a plot of land along University Drive and Orange Drive that included a town-authorized agreement dating back to 1989.
The agreement calls for commercial development on the land -- even 20 years later. That means Davie is bound by law to let the superstore in.
“If you don’t like it, leave,” said one resident.
“I was here before Wal-Mart,” said another.
The city has been back and forth on issues like size, noise and hours of operation. On Wednesday, the town's council finally agreed on a smaller store with limited hours.
