Alachua County Man Gets 40 Years For Bat Beating

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A central Florida man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for beating his girlfriend and her son with a baseball bat.An Alachua County judge sentenced 46-year-old Daniel Steven Fucci on Thursday. He pleaded no contest in September to attempted murder, aggravated child abuse and felony fleeing and attempting to elude.Deputies found the woman and her then-7-year-old son seriously injured at their Archer home in June 2008. Fucci was arrested some time later after crashing his vehicle in Levy County. Authorities say the couple had been arguing about finances before the attack.Fucci told the judge Thursday that the woman was coming at him with a knife and he was just trying to defend himself.Prosecutors had been seeking a 50-year sentence.
