New Information Possible About Mogul's Murder

Alleged Informant Causing Law Enforcement Controversy

POSTED: Wednesday, May 7, 2003

A woman claiming to have information about the murder of a well-known South Florida businessman is stirring up controversy between two law enforcement agencies.

Gus Boulis Anat Evenor of Plantation was picked up by the FBI last week after she allegedly obtained a fraudulent $80,000 loan on her house and was planning to go to Israel.

Evenor's husband Yair Malol, was arrested by the FBI in February during a crackdown on moving companies alleged to be cheating clients.

While in FBI custody, Evenor began claiming that she knows something about the murder of Sun-Cruz Cansino ships and Miami Subs chain founder Gus Boulis (pictured, right).

Boulis was gunned down two years ago as he left his Fort Lauderdale office. Investigators said the murder appeared to be a professional hit.

Now, the Fort Lauderdale police are wondering why the FBI hasn't told them more about Evenor's claim. They say they found out about her alleged knowledge through a media report, not from the FBI.

Dennis Salsbury with the Fort Lauderdale Police said, "We are kind of confused and concerned as to why it tooks so long for the FBI to contact us and in fact the media knew about it before the lead agency did."

He said, "We have information that she has information. What that information is is all supposition."

Investigators had focused their attention on other suspects in the past, but no arrests were made.

Now detectives working on the case say Evenor is a whole new player whose name has never come up before.

Salsbury said, "We are speaking to the FBI and hopefully we will get our turn to speak to her and see if she has any information that's pertinent to the case."

A spokesperson for the FBI refused to comment to Channel 10 on why the bureau waited to tell Fort Lauderdale police about the woman and what she was saying.

In fact the FBI told reporter Rad Berky that it was an ongoing investigation and they would not confirm that the woman had said anything at all about anything.
