A Homestead police officer was arrested Friday, accused of falsifying records in order to become a U.S. citizen.

Jose Villarreal, 31, faces charges of official misconduct, uttering forged instruments and false official statements.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Villarreal submitted a birth certificate listing a 1978 birth date that listed his aunt as his mother. Investigators said his real birth date was in 1977.

The FDLE said investigators believe Villarreal changed the birth year so he could be considered a minor at the time he applied to become a U.S. citizen.

Villarreal was taken to the Miami-Dade County Jail.
