Sudden Turbulence Slams Passengers Into Ceiling

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A plane landed at Fort-Lauderdale-Hollywood International with several injured people on board Thursday.

Continental Flight 1448 departed from Houston and arrived in Fort Lauderdale just after 2 p.m.
The MD-80 airliner was carrying 138 passengers and five crewmembers.
According to the captain, there was no turbulence anticipated in the area, and the seat belt indicator light was "off."
The captain said the plane hit a pocket of turbulence about an hour and a half into the 2-hour direct flight. He did not declare an emergency, but did request assistance upon landing.
James Milan, whose wife was one of those injured said, "We were just flying along smooth as can be, and then all of a sudden the plane just dropped out from under us."
Milan said his wife had just stood up, and she, along with several other passengers, hit the ceiling when the plane dropped.
The injured people were assessed and treated at at the airport. Paramedics set up a triage area at Gate C-1 in Terminal 1.
The five people injured included a flight attendant and a child. The injuries reportedly include a variety of strains and neck injuries.
Five people were taken to a hospital for treatment, but none of the injuries were reportedly serious.
