A man who was shot by police officers responding to a report of a man with a gun died at Broward General Medical Center, according to Fort Lauderdale police.

The man who died was identified by police as 31-year-old Allen Bryant.

Fort Lauderdale police said they received a call reporting that a man carrying a handgun was walking near the Downbeat Nightclub in the 600 block of Northwest 15th Way early Saturday.

Officers arrived just before 3:15 a.m. Police said the officers confronted Bryant, who tried to run away. The officers engaged Bryant and shot him, police said. Bryant was taken to Broward General Medical Center, where he later died.

The officers did find a gun at the scene, according to investigators.

Fort Lauderdale police said Bryant has a criminal history including charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, strong-arm robbery, aggravated assault with a firearm and shooting into a vehicle or building.

The Police Department identified the officers involved as Paul Kelley, James Hayes and Keith Siegel.
