MIAMI -- Firefighters reminded South Floridians Monday to make sure to use fireworks safely during their New Year's Eve celebrations.
According to Miami-Dade fire officials, any fireworks, even sparklers, can be dangerous. Alcohol use while setting off fireworks can make injuries more likely, firefighters said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said parents especially should use caution to keep their children safe around fireworks. Officials warned parents to closely supervise fireworks use and to use only legal fireworks bought from approved vendors. Young children should not be allowed to handle fireworks, fire officials said.
Miami-Dade fire officials said fireworks should only be lit on pavement and should be kept at least 25 feet away from grass and vegetation.
People should never try to relight or alter fireworks that do not work properly, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Officials said that instead, the fireworks should be left standing for several minutes and then discarded in a pail of water.
Firefighters said whoever is using the fireworks should light one item at a time and move away quickly, never holding or throwing the fireworks. People should stay a safe distance away.
If your clothes catch on fire, fire officials said you should stop, drop and roll over until the fire goes out.
A hose, a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher should always be kept handy, firefighters said.
