FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A couple was supposed to raffle off a Fort Lauderdale mansion on Christmas Day, but the drawing did not take place, leaving some ticketholders looking for answers.
In March, frustrated homeowners Miles and Laura Brannan could not sell their $2 million Fort Lauderdale home, so they decided to raffle it off at $10 per ticket. They hoped to sell 300,000 tickets and give the profits to a local charity.
"We always wanted to raffle off the house and sell the tickets, but that just didn't happen," said Miles Brannan.
At first, the raffle tickets were $10 and were selling. Eventually, the couple raised the price to $30 per ticket and enlisted a celebrity endorser, former basketball star, Dennis Rodman. But then, the Brannans said, they ran out of time.
Even with the national marketing campaign, the sales fell short. The couple sold fewer than 70,000 tickets, not enough to justify raffling off the house. So, they tried to extend the deadline.
The response from ticketholders was negative, with some asking for refunds. So, the Brannans are going to their Plan B, which means they will give half of the money raised to the raffle winner and half to the chosen charity, the Mission of St. Francis.
"It would behoove everyone for the house to be raffled off," said Jack Labarga of the Mission of St. Francis.
The Brannans are now back where they started, stuck with a house they still have to sell. But they said they would rather be stuck than appear dishonest.
"It's a situation where we tried to help everybody but obviously we can't please all the people," Laura Brannan said.
"We'd love for somebody to come buy it if we can't raffle it anymore. We need out. We need help," Miles Brannan said.
