POSTED: Thursday, December 31, 2009
UPDATED: 6:53 pm EST December 31,2009

State wildlife officials and volunteers spent part of their New Year's Eve rescuing a manatee from a spring in the Ocala National Forest.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, along with the Sea to Shore Alliance and volunteers pulled the manatee out of Silver Glen Springs in Marion County.

Officials said it is very unusual for a manatee to be found in Silver Glen Springs, just off Lake Georgia, and this one is stressed in some way.

The marine mammal was transported to Miami Seaquarium, where it will undergo diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation if needed.

This manatee has been named “Hurricane” by rescue volunteers and is one that is tracked by FWC.
