Doctors are calling it impossible, but an incredible story of survival has come out of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A man has been pulled from the rubble alive, 27 days after the earthquake hit.

"This is just unbelievable because to our knowledge nobody has ever survived this long and the rescue efforts were called off two almost two weeks ago," Dr. Barth Green told Local 10's Rob Schmitt Monday night.

The man was buried under the rubble of a marketplace where he worked and reportedly told doctors he was given water to help keep him alive. Doctors say it would be impossible to survive without some source of water for this long.

"I think he's set a world record, his family never gave up, it'll be quite a story when fully told," said Dr. Green.

Miami's Project Medishare is keeping a close eye on the man's condition. He has wounds to his feet but appears to be otherwise uninjured from the initial devastation of the earthquake. Malnutrition and dehydration are his key issues.

"We're optimistic he will survive. Everyone has crush injuries but he seems to be intact. He's in shock from being emaciated and the malnutrition that goes with not eating for 28 days," said Dr. Green.

The average person can survive only about three days without water.
