SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. -- An 81-year-old woman and her daughter were injured after a section of the floor collapsed inside the Marco Polo Hotel in Sunny Isles Beach Sunday afternoon.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said a 15-foot-by-15-foot portion of the lower lobby at the Marco Polo Beach Resort on 192 Street and Collins Avenue caved in around 5 p.m.
From the bottom of the 7-foot hole into which they had fallen Concha Ojeda held her 81-year-old mother and screamed for help.
"Crack, crack, we went down,” Concha Ojeda told Local 10. "I'm screaming and screaming and screaming."
Ojeda and her mother were walking in a lower lobby area of the hotel when the floor collapsed. The women fell about 7 feet into the hole and were trapped by debris.
Ojeda said they screamed for help. A hotel security guard heard their cries.
It took a team of 40 firefighters over an hour to rescue the victims.
Ojeda has a dislocated shoulder, cuts on her hands and a large bruise on her knee. Her mother suffered heavy bruising and remains hospitalized at Aventura Hospital.
Condominium board member Violete Jimenez admits the lower level of the Marco Polo is constantly flooded with sea water. However, she has a lot of questions about Ojeda's story.
"It's just a couple of tiles that were removed. I still don't understand how it happened," Jimenez said.
While inspectors and board members investigate, Concha Ojeda carries her arm in a sling and visits her mother at the hospital. She said she is traumatized and afraid of every step she takes inside the building.
Ojeda said she has lived in the building for 7 years. She would not say if she intends to sue the owners, but she has hired an attorney.
The Marco Polo is a mixed-use building with 509 condominium units and 109 hotel rooms.
The 10-story building was built in 1968 and is owned by Ramada. The manager said it recently passed a 40-year certification inspection.
No one was evacuated from the property but the lower lobby was sealed off.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
