COCONUT GROVE, Fla. -- Boaters raised their sails and pushed off from shore Wednesday for one of the many competitions during the 2010 Bacardi Cup regatta.
“The sailing here is spectacular,” said boater John MacCausland.
“Competition is the best, the boat is very challenging,” said Star class President Bill Allen.
The challenge draws hundreds of sailors to Miami from 20 different countries.
Mats Johansson traveled to "The Magic City" from Sweden in his star class sailing boat, which he calls Sharlet. “This is my daughter's name, so I gave my boat this name for fun and luck,” said Johansson.
The star class boat is manned by two people; competitors say it can be a challenging and even difficult boat to maneuver.
“You get a good start, your probably going to have a good race, adrenaline is pumping then for sure,” said MacCausland.
Boaters said they hope the adrenaline helps them sail into first place. “Obviously we would like to win, but top five would be a very respectable finish,” said MacCausland.
“This is one of the best places in the world right now for sailors,” said Johansson.
The 83rd Annual Bacardi Cup regatta is now officially part of the inaugural Bacardi Miami Sailing Week taking place in the waters of Biscayne Bay, through Friday.
Over 400 competitors from 10 different countries will take part. The event is open and free to the public.
