MIAMI -- Fifty-six World War II veterans made a special trip from Miami to Washington, D.C. Wednesday night to honor fellow servicemen who died in the war.
The group connected in Miami before heading to the nation's capital, where the men will visit the World War II Veteran's Memorial.
“It brings back a lot of memories,” said Jack Witty.
An honor guard, airport workers, members of the Miami-Dade Police Dept. and dozens of travelers applauded as the men went through security screening.
“Sure, I'm excited but it won't beat this reception," Robert Wetter told Local 10's Victor Oquendo.
“It’s not often that you get a reception like this," Witty said.
The veterans are traveling for free as part of American Airlines and the honor flight program.
“It's very important to do this for these veterans. We’re happy to do it in Miami," said George Hazy, American Airlines Vice President in Miami.
Ricardo Ortiz, who recently returned from Iraq, said he saw the ceremony and wasted no time greeting the men.
“They fought for me. The least I can do is fight for them," he said.
