POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- A woman who drove her car into a South Florida bagel shop Wednesday afternoon still can't figure out exactly what went wrong.
The crash happened at the Bagel Snack Restaurant & Del, 1235 South Pompano Parkway.
Lessie Bryan, 76, said she stopped at a bank to pay some bills when a man walked up to her car.
"He was asking about an Africa Church and I told him I didn't know an Africa church," Bryan told Local 10's Sasha Andrade.
Bryan said a second man approached her car and before she could react, the stranger was in the passenger seat of her car. He told her to follow another car.
"He had a big roll of money and said 'I'll fill your car with gas and give you $300," Bryan said.
That's when Bryan said she started to worry that she was the victim of a scam and lost control of her car.
"The car just took off," she said. "I tried to stop it, but I couldn't. It wouldn't stop. It's like it got faster."
"All of a sudden we heard a crash and chairs went flying, tables went flying," a witness told Local 10's Sasha Andrade.
The out-of-control vehicle went into the restaurant, hitting 65-year-old Dr. Daniel Brown. He is in critical condition at North Broward Medical Center.
According to witnesses, a man got out of the passenger seat and ran.
"I could just see myself going through that window and when the car stopped, he got out and ran," Bryan said.
Police are still investigating what exactly happened. They said no threats were made and nothing was stolen.
For now, they are officially classifying the incident an accident.
